I also have strong communication and team working skills which complement my passion for large-scale software development. I am self-motivated, dedicated and known for accuracy and attention to detail in my work. EDUCATION 2003 2007 University of Strathclyde Glasgow BSc (Hons) Computer Science Grade: 2.1 Key subjects: Software Architecture, Software Evaluation, Distributed Programming, Systems Analysis and Design, Low Level Programming, Databases, Software Correctness, Distributed Systems, Web Applications Engineering. Key Skills: Team working and leadership. Analytical, methodological and creative thinking. 2002 2003 Langside College Glasgow Higher Mathematics Grade A 2001 2003 Bell College of Technology Hamilton HND Computing (Software Development) Grade A for integrative project Grade A for integrative exam Merit award for Mathematics 1985 1991 St Andrews High East Kilbride Higher Grade: Technical Drawing Ordinary / Standard Grade: Maths, English, Physics, Biology, Geography, Technical Drawing, Art & Design, Craft & Design Work Experience Summer 2006 GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) Cheltenham Sponsored Undergraduate Technologist The project brief was to investigate how XML and related technologies could increase GCHQ's value to its customers. Working as a member of a large development team I investigated how we could utilise the ICMSP (Intelligence Community Metadata Standard for Publication) schema as new report structure. I was also involved in investigating how successful it would be to transform two million legacy documents from HTML to ICMSP using XSLT. The result of the investigation was successfully communicated to the department by project report and presentation. In my time a GCHQ I also had the opportunity to improve on some of my soft skills by giving project and team presentations, attending team building days and meetings with both technical and business managers. Work Experience Summer 2003 STEP (Shell Technology Enterprise Program) East Kilbride STEP Placement Student As the sole developer in a quarts manufacturing company I developed an automated reporting system between SAP and MS Excel. This involved writing advanced macros in VBA (Excel) that could dynamically reformat raw data from SAP to produce useful statistical information. On completion of the placement I finished six small applications that automated hours of weekly repetitive tasks. A panel of STEP judges made an assessment of the project success through project report and presentation. I worked closely with many the office and shop floor workers. I regularly had meetings with the managing director and other company directors about the progress and expected outcome of the work and as a result it helped me to appreciate the need to be able to communicate on many levels. 1991 2001 CTP Silleck/Duval, WHS & Son, Daniel Montgomery & Son UK Injection Moulding Engineer Working as an injection moulding engineer involved serving a four-year multi-disciplinary apprenticeship. This training involved all aspects in the production of injection moulded polymer products. On successful completion of the apprenticeship I worked mainly on setting-up moulding machines, production lines, trouble shooting technical problems and quality control. Positions of Responsibility In the fourth year of university I volunteered to work as a lab demonstrator and was subsequently chosen for a first-year Programming Foundations class and second-year Systems Analysis class. As software development has always been my strongest subject throughout university I was in an excellent position to share my experiences and knowledge. Whist working for WHS & Son (Scotland) I was responsible for all technical issues relating to production and was given the position of shift supervisor. This involved production scheduling and planning as well as directing a team of nine operators and one other engineer. Also involved in this role was responsibility for the training of technical apprentices. ACHIEVEMENTS I was awarded the Faculty of Science Deans certificate for achieving a meritorious standard in the third year of university. In the third year of university, in a team consisting of two others and myself, we won the prize awarded by Graham Technology for the best group project submission of 2006. We were up against 18 other teams in programming the best submission of Gizmoball, an adapted Java project from the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) open courseware. In the first year of university I won first place in the OReilly (publishers) programming competition as part of their academic prize scheme. The aim of the competition was to write a program in Java that would produce statistics on the outcome of a fairground game invented by the Strathclyde Computing Department. Interests and Past Times I am a member of my local gym where I like to keep fit by going a couple of times a week and have recently started training for a half marathon. One of my long running interests since I was a child is fishing. I still manage to go a couple of times a year although I usually try and combine this activity with camping so that I can get away for a weekend or two during the summer. I do of course like to go out for a few drinks at the weekend and have been known to throw some good parties and BBQs from time-to-time.
